Red Ribbon Week: Behind the Candy

Every year during the last week of October, Hillgrove students participate in Red Ribbon week. Red Ribbon week is a campaign created to bring awareness to drug abuse in teens and encourage students to choose a “drug free” life.

Red Ribbon week was founded by the National Family Partnership as a nonprofit group of parents seeking a way to bring awareness to drug use in youths. Today, 30 years after its founding NFP is the leader in drug prevention. The NFP focuses on promoting a healthy drug free life for families across America. The NFP sponsors the Red Ribbon week annually and is the driving force for the campaign.

In schools across America drug abuse is at an all time high in teenagers due to the ideology of drugs being associated with partying. That’s why Red Ribbon week is important. Students should be aware of the consequences they will face if they choose to participate in drug use. Many students don't fully understand the repercussions of their actions, so this week encourages students to be informed and choose to stay above the influence. To show your support for Red Ribbon week on Monday wear red. Tuesday is Western, so where your best western wear. Wednesday is is camoflauge day. Where red, white, and blue on Thursday. Friday wear your spirit wear to support Hillgrove’s effort in being drug free. Keep in mind that dress code will still be enforced throughout the week. Let’s come together and dress up to show our support for Red Ribbon week.
