I recently went to see the new Marvel Studios movie, Doctor Strange. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I tend to do with most Marvel movies. There was a lot to like about this movie especially, from the special effects to the acting. Doctor Strange easily takes its place among the other famous movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant-Man.
Doctor Strange is the story of a man named Stephen Strange. Strange is the world’s top neurosurgeon, and is highly involved in his work. When he is in a nearly fatal car crash, his hands are injured beyond repair, causing his career to be ruined. When he can’t find a solution in medicine, Strange decides to look for healing through spirit, which leads him to a being known as the Ancient One. There he learns that there is more to reality than meets the eye. The film is obviously based on the story covered in the comics, as most of the MCU movies are. The portrayal of Strange done by Benedict Cumberbatch is outstanding, and really stays close to the comic book’s portrayal. His acting is superb, and really brings a very serious, but also kind of humorous attitude to the film. Cumberbatch helps the viewer create an attachment to the characters and story of the movie.
The story of the movie is very interesting. When Strange finds the ancient one, she helps him learn of healing through magic. While learning this magic, he learns far more than he could have ever known. He learns that his reality is one of many different realities, and that they are all being threatened by an evil entity known as Dormammu. Strange is recruited to the cause of defending our reality from Dormammu and his dark dimension. The story is drawn from the comic books, and the film is very faithful to it.
The special effects are amazing, and they really help draw viewers into the world this movie helps to create. There are tons of special effects in this movie, and they are never disappointing in terms of quality, which really adds to the overall quality of the whole movie. Most of the movie is made with special effects, which some people have had a problem with, but I definitely don’t see a problem when it’s done this well. Another thing to consider is that the quality of the movie would probably suffer if they had tried to use practical effects in this movie. Doctor Strange is a fantastic movie that I highly recommend seeing with family and friends if you liked the other MCU movies. It really adds to the list of already great movies in the “series.”
