On February 8, SkillsUSA, headed by audio video teacher Mrs. Adams, went on a field trip to the Capitol to meet state representatives and media specialists for the nightly news, and then headed to the Varsity for lunch, all within a school day.
“[We met] the anchor that does the live show and the camera operator of the news for that building… [I liked} going to go sit in the rooms when the House of Representatives and Senate were voting, and getting to see how it all works,” says Nina Trammell (11).
“SkillsUSA promotes business, so going to the Capitol and seeing how everything’s run was cool. We got to talk to a lot of reporters who are there every single day talking about what events are going on in the Capitol,” gushes Will Harper (12).
The students were able to sit in the galleries of the House of Representatives and Senate, and listen to the ideas that people from both Houses were proposing to their fellow legislators. They were also able to meet interesting people that relate to SkillsUSA, a filmmaking-based club, like news anchors and producers.
“Getting to talk to Mrs. Adams and her friends, like the guy who operates the camera and her news anchor friend, and getting their advice was interesting,” states Allahna John (11).
