Ash Wednesday around The Grove

This week, on March 1st, the Catholic Church observed Ash Wednesday, which starts a period of fasting and sacrifice in the church called Lent, continuing until Easter on April 16. During this time, the Church emphasizes the importance of doing good deeds and and making sacrifices in order to become closer to Christ. Since we have a sizeable Catholic population here at Hillgrove, many of those students are celebrating this occasion, and recognizing the 40 days as a time for rejoicing and self-cleansing.
During Lent, it’s traditional to give up a vice in your life, such as unhealthy food, smoking/drinking, or, more recently, overuse of cellphones.
“I think I’m giving up all drinks except water, and certain social media… I’m also working on not just giving something up but doing something in return,” informs Gracelyn Ngyuyen (12). Gracelyn isn't the only one trying to do good deeds:
“I have a few things I try to do. I try to give up sweets, and I try to do things as well, such as increase prayer, and do some community service type things,” says Claire Squire (11). “Lent is a time for spiritual renewal, and to focus on sacrifices and helping better the lives of others.” Local churches include St. Joseph’s, St. Catherine’s, and St. Thomas’s at various mass times.
“I am going to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church… [at] 6:30 a.m.,” states John Jardin (12).
