Last Friday, on March 3rd, both the men’s and women’s choruses went to Lassiter High School to participate in LGPE, or Large Group Performance Evaluation. This is a sort of test for the choruses, and consists of a men’s chorus, women’s chorus, and mixed chorus, with both boys and girls.
“It brings all the pieces that we’ve worked on in front of educators and judges to see how much work we’ve provided, and they’ll score us,” says Caroline Caden (11), a member of both the women’s and mixed choruses.
The groups were scored on a scale of one to four, with one being the best score to receive. All three groups performed two songs, including a Russian piece called “The Angel” and “Ave Maria” for the women’s choruses, another Russian piece and Latin piece for the mixed, and Swedish pieces for the men’s. It seems that one song from the men’s chorus especially stood out:
“The guys performed ‘Red Robes’, and it amazed the judges. We got all ones in that category,” raves Andre Hasket (11).
The judges didn’t just evaluate the music, though. They also had sessions to constructively criticize the performers:
“You go to a clinic with one of the people who were listening, normally a professor of music, and they give you tips on your pieces, and then you do a sight-reading section where you get to have five minutes to evaluate a piece, and then you have to sing it, and you get scored on that as well,” informs Kate Miller (12). “We got all ones for everything.”
