Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet. Adopting from a shelter has many more benefits than adopting from a breeder.
The Humane Society has a ton of different breeds of dogs and types of cats to choose from. Also, you are saving a life. The more animals that are adopted from shelters, the more room there are for strays that can also be adopted. Overburdened shelters take in millions of stray, abused, and lost animals every year, and by adopting an animal, not only are you giving more animals a second chance, but the cost of your adoption goes directly towards helping those shelters better care for the animals they take in!
Also, adopting from a shelter will save you money. When you purchase your animal from a breeder, the cost is typically around $700- $4,000. When you adopt from the shelter, you pay from $10- $400, and the animals come spayed or neutered. Also, your adoption fees go towards the Humane Society, funding for more stray or abused animals.
Adopting from a shelter will help put an end to puppy mills. When you buy your dog from an online seller, or in a store, it is almost certain that you are buying a dog from a puppy mill. Puppy mills are factory-style breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs. Animals in puppy mills live in horrible, unsanitary, unsafe conditions and are often sick. Also, the dogs from puppy mills typically have behavioral problems because of the shocking conditions. By getting your dog from a shelter, you are helping put an end to puppy mills, by not giving them a cent of your money.
Here at Hillgrove, we have a “Hawks Heroes” club. They help fund raise for animal shelters in Cobb County. Julie Ewert said, “Every other month, we go to a shelter and help clean, and make beds and blankets.”
These heroes fully support adoption from shelters over breeders. Mackenzie Miller said, “We recently had a car wash, to put the money toward shelters, and we raised $800. Pets in shelters are in need for a home and need a loving family, and we want to help as much as we can.”
Shelters have every size, breed, temperament, and breed. You have more options; you have so many opportunities to find your perfect pet. Typically, animals from the shelter are sweeter and are desperately seeking love from a family. So, if you are considering adopting a pet, adopt from an animal shelter. There are plenty of animal shelters all around Georgia, and the ones closest to Hillgrove are the Cobb, Paulding, Douglas, Alpharetta, and Atlanta.
