On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, our Hillgrove track team will compete at the state meet. Coach Ironside will be taking the boys and girls track finalists down to Mt.Berry, Georgia for the weekend to compete. This is the first time that both genders are going to state at the same time. They are usually held at different venues in different cities. The boys team created Hillgrove history by dethroning Marietta High School of their region title they’ve held for nine years. Ironside has big hopes for her team, “We actually made it to state. Our region is so hard to compete in because there are so many great schools and athletes. The fact that our boys won the region and both girls and boys have been successful throughout the season is such a big deal for us. Our track student athletes deserve more recognition around campus.”
The girls track team has been struggling with injuries throughout the season but they have overcome! Senior Brandi McGrady says, “Our team is in a very good position right now. We’ve been practicing so hard lately because we wanted to be in the best shape possible to compete. We have so much talent within our team that when one of us gets injured,we are able to substitute fairly easily. We really want to place this year.”
Chris Williams, grade twelve, is confident traveling to Berry, “For the relays we had to change up the rotation because we lost a few significant runners. I feel like we are ready to compete and do our best to win. That’s all we can do.
Garrett Shedrick, a standout sophomore who runs the 200m, 400m, and relays, expresses, “I’m a little bit nervous but overall I feel pretty chill about state. I’m looking forward to hanging out with the team because we are pretty close. I think we will do well.”
Hopefully our Hawks will be successful at state this weekend. Good luck!
